Star dunes are quite stable, while barchan dunes may move as much as 66 feet each year. Dune stabilization has been implemented in some places in the Middle East as a result of economic development. Although sand fences and the physical removal of sand have been attempted, the best solution to prevent redevelopment of dunes is to aid nature, by planting vegetation. This may however be difficult to manage when water for irrigation is scarce.
